2nd international congress of the postgraduate research
and study programme on urban ecology Berlin

"Facing the challenge of urban diversity"

Integrative Approaches to Urban Ecolology

Since the early seventies, urban ecology has evolved from different disciplines and experienced several changes of research activities and applied methodology. Although the relationship between natural and social sciences has not always been established explicitly, the congruent spatial focus and the underlying applied questions have resulted in joint research approaches. In the last decades urban ecology has become an interdisciplinary field of research, integrating especially socio-economic approaches.

The research activities of the Berlin graduate programme in urban ecology follow from this development. Linkages between natural and social science have resulted mainly from generalized questions and common application-oriented aspects of the individual research. The symposia of the conference will be introduced by international experts in the particular topic. This structure will help to review the results of the postgraduate programme relating to the national and international research and to demonstrate their societal significance.
